We visited Paris recently during Paris Fashion Week, to show at WOMAN show. The MAN / WOMAN shows are held in an amazing building (originally a hot air balloon factory), on Rue Yves Toudic, near Canal St. Martin.

We love staying in the area, so here’s a mini guide to a few favourites…..

At 34 Rue Yves Toudic is the bakery Du Pain et des Idées the atmospheric shop dates from 1889, it looks and smells AMAZING! We ate ‘Le pain des Amis’ – their signature bread, ‘L’escargot au citron et nougat de Montélimar’ – a spiral of lemon and hazelnut in sweet pastry and ‘Le Chausson a la Pomme Fraiche’ – 1/2 an apple encased in puff pastry, and the Pain au Chocolat above, ALL delicious!

At the other side of the canal is interior shop COLONEL opened in 2012 by Isabelle Gilles and Yann Poncelet who make their own products – lighting and the mirror frames shown here, they also sell other brands, such as HAY furniture and moroccan boucherouite rugs.

Jo always makes a pilgrimage to her favourite shop in Paris – E.Dehellerin which sells kitchen tools and cookware. Its a short journey away from our base in the 10th, in Les Halles. The business dates from 1820. Even if your not into cooking, the shop is worth a visit just to have a look at the amazing displays of shiny things!

Lastly, we must urge you to go to Le Comptoir General – “an art museum dedicated to ghetto culture, especially in Africa.”A cavernous space with many areas including a bar, an outdoor garden, record shop and a library… oh and an area called Le Cabinet de Sorcellerie – an installation of old cabinets full of hand crafted oddities reminiscent of witchcraft and sorcery. The photo above was taken in the ballroom, where there is a display of beautiful hand painted barbershop signs.

You really must go for a glass of rum punch!
